Barbara Sheffield has a strong track record in health care communications having established a medical education communications company in Canada for an American parent company as well as working with an international communications company. She has been involved in health communications consulting for pharmaceutical companies, national health organizations and a variety of non-profit organizations as well as the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care where she has worked on such major projects as—Hospital Reports, Ontario’s Health System Performance Reports, Health Outcomes for Better Information and Care, wait times strategy, and Ontario Laboratory Information Systems. She has also created communications strategies for companies in the food, nutrition and consumer goods sector. Barbara has lectured frequently at community college and has conducted a variety of workshops in the non-profit sector addressing the role of public relations in achieving overall organizational objectives. As the first woman to be national president of the Canadian Public Relations Society, she addressed all member societies on new strategies for demonstrating professionalism. Barbara has been an accredited member of the Canadian Public Relations Society since 1976 and is a participant in the maintenance of accreditation program. In 2006, she was honoured with The Society’s Life Membership. She was instrumental in establishing the maintenance program when she chaired the Society’s Accreditation Council. She spearheaded the establishment of the Society’s College of Fellows in 2000 and was recognized by her peers in 2002 when they invited her to join the College as one of 20 members across Canada.
